Cloud Nine Wide Plate Hair Straightener Review

February 20, 2015 By Cute Hair Day

Pros

  • Very high quality
  • Great for styling long, coarse hair
  • Switches to hibernation mode when not in use
  • 1 year warranty

Cons

  • Expensive
  • Not perfect for very thick hair

Summary

Wide plate irons are designed for long, thick hair. So naturally you can expect them to work better on these hair types than your standard pair of straighteners.

This Wide Plate Iron maintains the same high quality that Cloud Nine straighteners are fast gaining a reputation for. With a number of desirable features – smooth plates, easy temperature control, hibernation mode and a long swivel cord, to name a few- these straighteners are worth their salt if you’re looking for a pair that will style long, thick hair quickly.

But if you have very thick, hard to manage hair, it might be worth considering your options. This is an area in which GHDs still have the upper hand and it may be worth spending the extra money if you want to achieve the very best results.

In-Depth Review

This isn’t the first time Cloud Nine have managed to impress me and with their growing following it seems I’m not the only one.

Their kinder to hair approach is really worth getting behind. There are too many hair products out there that only work well at ridiculously high temperatures. Anything over 200° can damage hair unless heat protection spray is used, so its great to use an iron that can style hair quickly and smoothly even when it’s operating at a lower setting.

The Cloud Nine Original Iron comes with:

  • 1 x Wide Plate Hair Straightener
  • 1 x Carry Pouch
  • 1 x Heat Protective Guard

This iron’s wide plates are good for styling your hair quickly. Cloud Nine straighteners in general heat up very fast and glide through without snagging. The fact these ones have bigger plates just makes the process even smoother.

But a word of caution for those with very thick hair; there are a lot of reviews online that claim these irons are great for people with coarse, frizzy, thick hair. But personally I’m not so sure. The great thing about the Wide Plate Iron is that it works brilliantly on most hair types even on low settings. But when it comes to thick, hard to manage hair you find yourself having to crank up the heat which immediately defeats Cloud Nine’s ‘kind to hair’ selling point.

Don’t get me wrong – this is a very high quality pair of straighteners. But for very thick hair, you get more for your money with GHDs. By all means give these ones a try but it’s probably worth forking out the extra cash if you really want to achieve the best styling results. At the end of the day, the price difference is not huge.

For those with fine to moderately thick hair however, these are a solid choice. Their wide plates are super smooth, making them incredibly easy to use. They’re more curved than your average wider plate straighteners, which make them great for creating a voluminous, loose wave.

The hibernation mode saves you worrying about whether you remembered to turn them off. They switch off after 30 minutes when not in use.

They also come with a booklet with illustrations and step-by-step walkthroughs of loads of different styles. It reveals the versatility of the straighteners too. They are capable of creating a huge range of looks, whether it’s flicks, poker straight hair or wavy ends.

Overall, these really are worth the money for nearly all hair types. But err on the side of caution if your hair is very thick.
