Pros
- Looks great
- Long cable with hanging loop
- Powerful
- Good price
Cons
- Too powerful on lowest setting for fine hair
- Heavy and noisy
Summary
As a budget BaByliss dryer, this is fantastic. There are few hair dryers in this price range that are as good as this and the only real improvement is an even lower speed setting and a diffuser attachment. If you’re not interested in spending tons of a fancy named hair dryer and just want something that will do the job without the bells and whistles, this is definitely one to consider. It looks great, works great and styles beautifully. While it’s heavy, think of it as weight lifting and while it’s noisy….well, you can’t have everything right?

In-Depth Review
Founded in Paris in the 60s by a French stylist, BaByliss has gone from local enterprise to global household name in remarkably few years. Now owned by Conair, BaByliss creates the latest personal care appliances but without the large price tags of brands like GHD and Diva.
The BaByliss 5541CU Pro Speed Hair Dryer comes with:
- 1x Hair dryer
- 1x Concentrator nozzle
First things first, this hair dryer looks awesome. It’s managed to look sleek, modern and cool without going overboard on any of those things, a rarity indeed. With a smooth black body and blue detailing, it has well placed buttons and feels solid and well built. The weight is a little heavy but for home use it should be fine.
This BaByliss has a 2200W motor and is actually really powerful – too powerful though on the lowest speed setting which rules it out for those with fine hair unless you want to look like a bird’s nest. For those with long, thick hair, this hair dryer is a dream at a fantastic price.

With three heat settings it’s suitable for styling as well as drying and the two speed settings are both powerful. There’s a cold shot button to seal any style and stop flyaways combined with the ionic technology, which does seem to smooth hair during the drying process.
While it only comes with a single attachment, a concentrator nozzle but it fits well on the end (some have a tendency to fall off) and is useful for styling and blow-drying hair perfectly straight.
With a long cable, and a hanging loop, BaByliss have really put the good things into this model without anything unnecessary. Unfortunately this isn’t a quiet dryer by anyone’s standards, which can get a bit grating after a long styling session. If you are using it for lengthy styling then the weight could also become a problem.
The rear filter is removable which is crucial to keep the lifespan of the dryer. It must be cleaned regularly with a soft brush (with the dryer is cool, turned off and unplugged) to prevent dust build up and subsequent overheating. This might seem like a chore but you don’t want to melt the plastic nozzle from the overheating or break the motor.
The price is really good for this standard of hair dryer and I’d definitely recommend it for those with long and/or thick hair.
