Braun Silk-épil 7 7-891 Wet and Dry Cordless Dual Epilator Review

July 14, 2015 By Cute Hair Day

Pros

  • Can be used in the shower or in the dry
  • Rechargeable and cordless
  • Nice aesthetic design

Cons

  • Only 30 minutes of use per 1 hour of charge compared to 40 minutes of use with the series 9
  • Gillette Venus technology isn’t particularly useful

Summary

This is a decent epilator that will work well and not make you cry with pain. It looks good, is rechargeable and can be used in the shower but when you look at the price? Hmmm. The Braun Silk-épil 9 epilators are full of useful attachments and technology and aren’t that much pricier than this one – relatively speaking, they have way more going for them.

The sensitive cap for this is good and the efficiency cap isn’t bad but is comparable to the series 9 wider head so it’s much of a selling point. The Gillette Blades feature of this just aren’t useful enough to justify the price. My opinion? Look to the series 9. [Edit: Since reviewing this epilator the price has come down significantly making it a good choice if you can’t afford the series 9]

In-Depth Review

Braun started its epilator Silk-épil range years ago and it’s interesting to see the successive leaps in technology. While the Series 7 isn’t their newest, it’s certainly still a range worth paying attention to. This hundred-year-old brand is trusted by households all over the world and you’d be hard-pushed to find a personal appliance company that has the range of epilators Braun does.

The Braun Silk-épil 7 7891 Wet and Dry Cordless Dual Epilator with Gillette Venus Technology and four Attachments comes with:

  • 1x Silk-épil 7 7891 epilator
  • 1x Charging stand
  • 1x Sensitive area cap
  • 1x Efficiency cap
  • 1x Smoothing cap with Gillette Venus technology

This is a decent wet and dry epilator from Braun that automatically ticks a few boxes as it’s cordless, rechargeable and can be used in the bath or shower. I particularly like epilators that allow this as they’re generally less painful, easy to clean and so much less faff. Unlike the newer series 9 range, this epilator gives only 30 minutes use per hour of charge as opposed to 40 minutes. It’s not a big downside, but it’s worth noting.

The smoothing cap with ‘Gillette Venus technology’ is an interesting touch and incorporates Gillette Venus razor blades with the epilator head to catch any hairs not plucked out. While it sounds like a useful thing, I’m not sold on it and wouldn’t really want to buy this because of it. This seems like an excuse to bump the price up and I just don’t think it’s worth it. If you want to use a razor to catch the last stragglers then get an epilator with a shaver head and then you’ve got more freedom of use.

The efficiency cap allows for more skin contact and thus a faster process but honestly, I think this is achieved more successfully in the new Silk-épil 9 range that has the wider head. The sensitive area cap is okay and works reasonably well, especially if you use it in a warm shower.

For this price, I actually don’t think this Braun epilator is a great buy. This is because it only comes with two attachments and the price isn’t that much lower than those in the series 9 range. [Edit: Since reviewing this epilator the price has come down significantly making it a good choice if you can’t afford the series 9] The additional accessories that come with the series 9 epilators are great and very expensive to buy individually so if you’re looking for a really worthwhile epilator, you’re better off looking there. This works well, but it’s just not got enough going for it to justify the price.
